Lithothamnion calcareum is a multi-mineral red marine alga which comes from the ocean, in particular the pristine waters of the North Atlantic off of Iceland. It’s here where the warm waters of the Gulf Stream mix with the cold waters of the Arctic that an ideal environment for the deposition of this marine calcium is created. 

Over the past decade, this marine alga has gained more reputation to be used as an ingredient in many sectors – food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics – mainly due to the quality marine calcium in its composition.  In fact, there is a noticeable difference between the calcium in Lithothamnion and the calcium derived from limestone (calcium carbonate). The distinction comes from the bioactive nature of the calcium present in Lithothamnion which is itself characterised by the rigid honeycomb cell structure shape as well as 72 trace minerals absorbed in it from the sea.
Lithothamnion provides a host of health benefits from bone to joint and hydration, to gastrointestinal health. The use of this marine calcium in patients in knee pain, for example, has been correlated to a reduction in the use of pain relievers. Furthermore, the calcium and magnesium are known to help prevent muscle soreness and cramping. In addition, the 72-plus trace minerals together with the calcium and magnesium are an ideal match for the bioavailable structure that facilitates a quick absorption of these components by the body. It’s also note-worthy that the high mineral content in this marine calcium makes it highly effective for individuals with gastrointestinal discomfort. What is more, it also plays a significant role in the overall maintenance of a healthier gut.

To better cater for the needs of our clients, Aterimar have initiated a partnership with an Icelandic company, Biogenic Minerals, who harvests Lithothamnium Calcareum from North Atlantic seabed and produces it in powder form which can be used in food supplements, pharmaceutical products, as well as cosmetics.
